The apple capital of Virginia!  And home base to the WP&P.  Winchester was the first major outlet for coal coming out of Paston Valley, where it was turned over to the B&O initially.  Later, with NW’s increased influence over the road, a line was extended south to Portsmouth, and traffic going to the B&O dried up.

Winchester is the main yard for the division, serving as both a coal marshalling point for Paston Valley turns, and as a busy interchange yard for B&O and PRR-bound loads.  There are a few industries in town, most significantly the apple grower’s warehouse.  The yard sits on a terrace along the north slope of Buffalo Lick Run, and Interstate 81 bisects the yard right at the yard ladder, which had to be reconfigured when the highway was built.
