To Richmond

I have never yet modeled Portsmouth, save for one small diorama which explored the use of office fluorescent light fixture glazing to represent waves in the harbor.  This scene consisted of a single spur set against a featureless warehouse wall at the back, with wharf pilings and water in front.  I doubt I still have this scene.

My grandfather worked as a postal clerk on an RPO car, frequently assigned to the Silver Comet, which served Portsmouth.  One the WP&P, the “Tidewater Comet” made connections with this and other varnish, linking Portsmouth with Richmond and Winchester.

To Norfolk

Portsmouth, VA, was the last “P” to be connected, finally affording the WP&P its outlet to the sea.  Directly across the water from the larger port facilities in Norfolk and Newport News, it hosted only a single coal pier and a wharf and warehouse.
