Cards From Art Challenge

Over at Magica Rasa, they host an ongoing design challenge wherein a piece of artwork is given, with the aim to design the best card around that artwork, and usually with some extra stipulation such as “don’t use these words” or a color restriction. I’ve been having fun entering this contest, and have even won once! Here are all the cards I have entered.

You can see these in context by following this link to see all posts tagged with my name on Magica Rasa;

FIRST EVER ENTRY

The challenge was to do a card that might get alternate art promo printing; I didn’t win because it was felt that a planeswalker doesn’t meet this. But I love this guy – he’s more like a slow modal spell, as you don’t get to reload his loyalty, which is definitely intentional.

FIRST WINNER

This challenge was to avoid using the words “target”, “destroy”, “damage”, or “die”. I thought of alternate words – exile, each, gain life – and ended up with this versatile variation of Sphinx’s Revelation.

CARD CYCLES & OTHER CARDS

Occasionally I might design a full cycle (ie all the colors) around one actual contest entry, such as Freehold Menhir. The other cards in the cycle are not contest entries per se. Also included here are additional cards such as the token creature created by Tervig’s ultimate ability.

OTHER CONTESTS

I’ve also begun entering card designs in contests held elsewhere, such as at Best Custom MTG (bestcustommtg.tumblr.com):
